Bangladesh is a small and beautiful country in South Asia. It has beautiful landscapes, a medium-height hilly range, sandy and unbroken beaches and the Sundarbans, a world heritage site. It has 3000 years old archeological heritage. We can classify Bangladeshi tourist attractions into following categories:

Besides, we have beautiful beaches including Patenga sea beach in Chittagong, Teknaf sea beach in Cox’s Bazar, sea beach in Saint Martin’s Island, Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali. Each of these beaches has unique features to offer to tourists. We have places like Kotka, Dublar Char and Hiron point where adventurous tourists’ minds can set sail of imagination.

Religious holy places: There are many places of religious importance in Bangladesh including the Mazar of Hazrat Shah Jalal (Rah.) and  Shah Poran (Rah.) in Sylhet, Shah Mostafa (Rah.) in Moulvibazar, Khan Jahan Ali (Rah.) in Bagherhat, Shah Mokhdum (Rah.) in Rajshahi. All these are holy places for the Muslim. There is a long list of historical mosques, temples, pagodas, and churches throughout the country. Dhakeshwari Temple and Joy Kali Temple in Dhaka, Kantaji Temple in Dinajpur, Chandranath Temple in Chittagong, Dhamrai Jagannath Roth in Dhamrai, Boro Kali Bari Temple in Mymensingh, Jagannath Temple in Comilla, Adinath Temple, Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar etc. There are historical Buddhist religious places in Bangladesh. These are gems that can help introduce religious tourism in the country.

Hill tracts: A range of hills enters Bangladesh from the great Himalaya Mountain via Sylhet and Moulvibazar region and continues its journey up to Cox’s Bazar region via Comilla, Chittagong, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrasori districts. All these hills offer tourists beautiful landscapes.  Some ethnic minority groups live in these hilly areas that can attract tourist by presenting their diversified cultural programmes.

Lonely Islands: Using the natural beauty and resources rich tourism spots can be developed in St. Martin’s, Chhera, Kutubdia, Maheshkhali, Sonadia and Sandwip Islands.

Historical monuments: There is a long list of historical monuments like National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, Central Shahid Minar in Dhaka, Karjan Hall, grave of the National Poet, grave of the Founder of Bangladesh and other national leaders and National Parliament Bhaban that attract a huge number of tourists every year.

The Sundarbans: The great beauty-queen Sundarban is a great tourism destination. Every year many people visit the Sundarbans. Planned development of tourism facilities in this place can make this tourism spot a world class tourism attraction.

With increasing per capita income of the people, Bangladesh has a huge potential to develop domestic tourism. Now people visit a small number of destinations that have developed quality services including catering, outdoor games, accommodation, etc. It is matter of hope that the number of domestic tourists is increasing day by day.

Unemployment problem has been affecting the development of Bangladesh. Tourism industry can help create jobs and thereby develop the country. Now tourism is mostly a seasonal business.  The government should take steps to make tourism a year-long venture. And it should remove all the bottlenecks to developing tourism sector for both domestic and foreign tourists.
